The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Apex Legends Developer to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Comes After Lukewarm Response

Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster unveiling last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a distinct direction.

The president stated that the developers is now overhauling the project with a revised focus, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment

This announcement echoes a comparable action taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the complete message from the president's communication:

Dear Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and talented developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to persist.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last fall’s the game testing phase was enlightening. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It revealed the need for a clearer identity.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to mind and reimagined the title with a revitalized goal - one that’s poised to fulfill its ambition to our players.

The trust in this project grows every day. To boost the incredible advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of the team. Following a period of talks, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s leadership and background in the competitive gaming field is vast, having devoted the recent years producing and managing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in greeting Ben soon. We are all excited to keep seeing the progress of the game in the weeks to come.

The President

Background of the New Head

Brinkman currently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at other industry leaders.

Game Information and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 together with a early access event. Initially, the developers portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the description states. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, challenges, and obstacles that shift every session. Do you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your squad can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."

The game does not have an official launch window or platforms, but players can look forward to additional details as development continues.
