The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
