British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
