Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
